JAMB Subject Combination for Medicine and Surgery
Medicine and Surgery is one of the most competitive and respected courses in Nigerian universities. Every year, thousands of candidates apply to study the course, but only a small percentage gain admission because of the strict admission requirements.
One of the most common reasons candidates lose admission is choosing the wrong JAMB subject combination. Even if you score very high in UTME, selecting the wrong subjects can automatically make you ineligible for admission.
In this guide, you will learn the correct JAMB subject combination for Medicine and Surgery, the O'Level requirements, Direct Entry qualifications, the recommended JAMB score, and the universities in Nigeria where you can study the course.
Read through carefully to avoid mistakes that could affect your admission.
JAMB Subject Combination for Medicine and Surgery
Before registering for UTME, every candidate must choose four subjects that match their intended course of study. These subjects are determined by JAMB in collaboration with Nigerian universities, and using the wrong combination can lead to disqualification during the admission process. The approved JAMB subject combination for Medicine and Surgery is:
- English Language (Compulsory)
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
These are the only subjects accepted by Nigerian universities for admission into Medicine and Surgery through UTME.
JAMB Cut-Off Mark for Medicine and Surgery
The general JAMB minimum cut-off mark for university admission is 150. However, Medicine and Surgery is one of the most competitive courses in Nigeria, and no university admits candidates with a score close to the minimum benchmark. For a realistic chance of admission, candidates should aim for:
- 250 and above for many federal and top state universities.
- 270 and above for highly competitive universities such as UI, UNILAG, OAU, UNN, and UNIBEN.
The higher your UTME score, the better your chances of gaining admission.
O'Level Requirements for Medicine and Surgery
Candidates must possess five (5) credit passes in one sitting in the following subjects:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics
The results can be obtained from WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB. Most universities require the five credits to be obtained in one sitting because of the competitive nature of the course.
Direct Entry Requirements for Medicine and Surgery
Candidates seeking admission through Direct Entry must satisfy the UTME O'Level requirements and possess one of the following qualifications:
- Two or three A-Level passes in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- IJMB or JUPEB with excellent grades in the relevant science subjects.
- A recognized bachelor's degree in a related science discipline may also be accepted by some universities.
Candidates should note that Direct Entry requirements may differ slightly from one university to another.
